What is Chitosan?

Chitosan is one of the few cationic polymers found in nature and, as such, is used in a wide range of applications.

Chitosan SKL is extracted from crustacean exoskeletons and is regulated by the European Community as a Basic Substance and is indicated for agriculture as a biostimulant and enhancer of plants' endogenous defenses, for vegetable gardens and fruit crops.

What is Chitosan used for in Agriculture?

Chitosan SKL, applied to crops both foliarly and for seed treatment, increases the levels of endogenous hormones a few hours after treatment, particularly indoleacetic acid (a very important growth hormone in plants, closely related to root development) and gibberellic acid (promoter of lateral shoot formation, regulator of fruit growth, inducer of mitosis, etc.). This stimulates the plant to defend itself autonomously against external pathogens.

Treatments with Chitosan, therefore, should be carried out preventively and not curatively!

Applied to crops both foliarly and for seed treatment, it has been shown that Chitosan induces a series of beneficial responses in numerous important crops:

  • direct antibiosis against crop pests and pathogens;
  • increases the number of beneficial microorganisms for plant defense and growth;
  • stimulates plant defenses against biotic stresses;
  • regulates plant growth, development, nutrition, and tolerance to abiotic stresses.
