Description
The use of rapeseed oil for plant defense
Rapeseed oil is a natural product that has been used in organic farming for many years to protect plants from pests. In recent years, thanks to technological advancements, it has also become available for hobbyists.
Rapeseed oil is particularly effective against parasitic insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts, such as aphids, mites, whiteflies, and scale insects. These insects feed on the plant sap, causing deterioration and, in severe cases, death.
Rapeseed oil acts as an insecticide and acaricide. When sprayed on insects, it covers them with a film that prevents them from breathing, causing death by suffocation.
When to use rapeseed oil
Rapeseed oil can be used in all stages of development of parasitic insects. Normally, it is used at the first appearance of pests, from February to October, when insects are most active.
How to use rapeseed oil
Before using rapeseed oil, it is important to check if it is a ready-to-use or concentrated product. Ready-to-use products are ready for immediate use, while concentrated products need to be diluted in water following the instructions on the packaging.
In both cases, rapeseed oil should be sprayed on the entire foliage, especially wetting the undersides of the leaves, where insect eggs hide.
Treatments should be carried out during the cooler hours of the day, avoiding the hottest hours. Additionally, it is important to avoid spraying rapeseed oil directly on flowers, as some plants may be sensitive to oils.
Combined use of multiple solutions
To achieve the best results, it is advisable to use rapeseed oil in combination with other biological defense solutions. For example, against aphids, mites, and scale insects, nettle extract can also be used.
