What is Sunflower Oil in Agriculture?

Sunflower Oil is a non-volatile substance obtained from sunflower seeds (Helianthus annuus); it is commonly used in food and cosmetic formulations as an emollient.

This oil has an amber color and a high content of vitamin E. Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/1978 of 11 November 2016 approved Sunflower Oil as a Basic Substance in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the placing of plant protection products on the market.

Sunflower Oil SKL is highly refined and controls virus-carrying insects, pathogenic fungi, mites, and other fungal diseases.

Sunflower Oil: a natural remedy against Powdery Mildew

As documented by studies from EFSA, Sunflower Oil is an excellent contact antiodic.
From the study "Effects of Sunflower Oil on Tomato Powdery Mildew Caused by Oidium neolycopersici" conducted by the Department of Plant Pathology in Taiwan, Sunflower Oil is the most effective antiodic compared to other vegetable oils (rapeseed oil, corn oil, grape seed oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, soybean oil).

Applied on the upper surface of the leaves, it inhibits the germination of fungal conidia and the development of the pathogen's mycelium. Applied on the lower surface of the leaf, no evident effects on the control of Powdery Mildew are observed (slight activation of defense mechanisms).

Sunflower Oil SKL reduces fungal growth and spore germination on treated surfaces. Furthermore, it modifies and devitalizes the structure of the cell membrane. It has a fungistatic action that is exerted preventively by blocking the growth of pathogenic fungi.

What is Sunflower Oil used for in Agriculture?

Sunflower Oil has been recognized as capable of controlling:

  • Aphids on Apple, Pear, Cherry, Potato;
  • Mites on Grapevine, Peach, Cherry, and vegetable crops;

Applied on an Aphid colony, Sunflower Oil forms a persistent film that does not allow proper respiration to Aphids, causing their death by asphyxiation. The process is purely physical, so we do not handle or come into contact with toxic chemicals.

It is recommended to avoid treatments during the flowering period and in high temperatures.
